Gen Japanese Restaurant, Legend Hotel KL
By Cookies Cream | September 7, 2007
Went to a Japanese Restaurant in Legend Hotel with Shujin. I’ve been to this restaurant for a couple of times. The first time is when my mom’s friend introduced to us about it. It was really a pleasure to have a great makan time with all the fresh and wonderful food. Second time went, it was because my mom’s friend have a special member card with a 30% discount for each person. At that special moment they also offer raw scallops at the teppanyaki corner where you’re able to grab them together with other raw ingredients and hand it over to the teppanyaki chef to cook for you. But you have to aim real fast cause the scallops will kena sapu finish if you’re slower than others.
Well, this is the third time I went with Shujin for some special occasion.
I missed their tenpura, teppanyaki, sashimi, edamame, deep fried mini baby crabs/mini baby prawns (I actually forgot whether it’s crabs or prawns but I’m sure it’s either one!) and their chuka idako (baby octopus) the most! But this time around there isnt any mini baby crabs/prawns. *Sob sob*
I’m actually kinda tired and lazy to write a long post…so I’ll make a “picture worth a thousand words” kinda thing , alright? Wahaha…
So, here we go.

Cute little cup. I loved the design of this cup. Looked quite feminine to me. Wish I could bring it back….

Another cute one! It’s a soy sauce pot/bottle/container???

Chuka Idako~! It’s so yummy, crunchy, and sweet….

Jellyfishhh~! With century egg and sliced cucumber. The jellyfish was a tad too sweet to my liking, but if you eat it together with century egg and cucumber helps to balance the vinegar mixed in jellyfish. The sesame makes it so aromatic.

On top left was deep fried potato mixed with mince meat, BBQ teriyaki chicken drumstick, and grilled salmon. Nothing much to say about these 3 items. They’re not bad overall.

Fish paste wrapped in white cabbage. The fish paste was quite bouncy yet flavorful, eat it together with the soft cabbage that have absorbed the sauce after a while of cooking is yummy.

The nicely fried odoriferous anchovies were very crispy indeed.

I took it cause this little prawn salad looked cute, no? =) It does look cute and appetizing, but it’s ok only.

Anyone love this cute little corn here? Feel like biting one now…hmm. ~.~

Edamame!!! It’s a must for me…hahaha. Just love it so much…dip it in wasabi+soy sauce…and slurpss ~

Zaru Soba? I took a bowl put in some soba noodle, put some shredded mushrooms, shredded fried eggs, chopped spring onions, and pour in the sauce. It tasted very refreshing. But the mushrooms were tad too sweet for me.
It’s written there as Zaru Soba, don’t really know what it is. Nak tahu apa itu, so went to do a lil research. And the results? It doesn’t really match with the ones given in Gen Restaurant. It’s supposed to be plain noodle with shredded nori seaweed.
There’s 3 different kind of soba (If not mistaken, correct me if I’m wrong): Mori Soba - Basically is the normal chilled soba noodle where it’s served on a plate or bamboo rack, Zaru Soba - It’s like Mori Soba but said it’s served with shredded nori seaweed and put on a sieve-like bamboo tray, and Furikake Soba (have more subs in Furikake Soba) - This one is like normal cold soba but you can have various topping to serve with it.
You can read the links below to know more about soba:

Very fresh oyster…but I don’t eat! Took 1 to try…put at least 2 big slices lime and still… o.O
Love the calamari rings, butter fish and salmon. So fresh and yummy~ Prawns were fresh too. Their seafood were fresh fresh fresh! Slurpss~

Sukiyaki without beef anyone? I didn’t notice seeing any beef there. So, hmm…Take what you want from trays of raw ingrediens prepared there. They’ll cook it and you’ll have to go back there and get yours.

From left clockwise: More sashimi, unagi roll, soft shell crab roll, fish roe (I think it’s Masago a.k.a smelt fish eggs a.k.a capelin roe), and a plate of butter fish with soy sauce and cucumber cubes. Not sure what’s the black dot thingy…black fish roe perhaps?

Their tenpura were very very crunchy and fresh! Prawns were very springy inside and you could taste the sweetness of the prawns. The vegetables tenpura were very nice too. The batter were just nice.

Teppanyaki~! These are the few things I chose. Salmon, squids, and vegetables (bean sprouts, spring onions, enoki mushrooms aka velvet shank, and oyster mushrooms).

I chose salmon, which turns out superb.

I also picked squids. It’s really nice and calamari were sweet and springy.

Grilled Unagi~!!! It’s soft and tender, and the wonderful taste of it lingers in my throat….
What what what??? So fast dessert time?

Ok, first and foremost be healthy~! Eat some fruits. Look, there’s red flesh dragon fruit.

Does it look pretty???

Yup, it is very colorful yet alluring. This is the chocolate chip cheese cake. This is the best one in the restaurant. It’s super cheesy and they used chocolate cookies as the base of the cake. There’s 1 thing that I don’t like. Why? Cause the cake is not cold. It makes the cake go too soft. When you cut the cake with your spoon it’ll not hold firm. It’s like a lump of cream or something? But the taste from the base to the cake are really good! I reckon if it’s served cold it’ll be heavenly delish!

Ok, here comes the yuckiest not so good one! Mango pudding kinda cake. It’s soo soo soft that it don’t even allow me to lift the cake up from the tray and place it into my plate. It’s like soft jelly. If you’re not careful the cake will drop and smash into pieces~! The taste were mango-ish, but it makes you wanna *…* after a few mouth cause it’s really soft…I don’t even know what I’m talking about. I’m not sure if it’s because they left the cake outside the refrigerator for too long. I don’t like it, perhaps maybe others do like it.

This is strawberry cake. It’s like layers of sponge cake. In between each layers of the cake were strawberry cream. The cake were not soft/fluffy enough for me. The cake was quite dry, but the taste was not bad.

This is the almond cake? I’m not sure what it’s called. But it’s really good. Most unexpected. The moment I took it and put it into my plate I thought it’ll be the ordinary cakes. But, there’s so much almonds in it and it’s really aromatic. The cake was firm and nice.

Last but not least, green tea ice cream with red azuki beans. It’s nice, accompanying the green tea ice cream with azuki beans. Yummy~! Too bad I didn’t get to add in my favourite topping into my bowl of ice cream, only added the azuki beans. There’s some crushed peanuts, and other toppings for you to add in if you don’t want your ice cream to look plain.

Mei Yen - Eh, I’m not really sure about their lunch buffet. Maybe you can call them and ask? =)
MyCoffee - Thanks for the compliment!
citygal - I think it’s worth cause their food were darn fresh! Compare to Shogun, Gen didn’t have a lot of variety but I don’t mind cause Shogun’s food don’t reach my level of pure Japanese food and freshness. LOL *My own opinion*
jackson - You soo busy how to invite you?
jason aka ipohwav3 - LOL. If you love fresh food, good service, and nice environment…go and have a try~
lotsofcravings - Yeah, their dessert was quite surprising. But I wished they have more traditional dessert as well.
Sugar Bean - Hehe, if you’re there and they serves the choc chip cheese cake..do give it a try!
wmw - Thank you wmw~!
