Yuen Kee (源记) Restaurant, Jalan Kepong

    By Cookies Cream | December 5, 2007

Yuen Kee (源记) Restaurant is located just next to a chinese temple “三间庙” in Jinjang Utara, Jalan Kepong. I forgot to get the full address or contact number from them. I’m not sure how to explain it correctly on how to go there, but if you come from Loke Yew road, straight up to Maharajalela, to Jalan Kinabalu all the way straight to Jinjang Utara..then you’ll be able to see it on your right side when you turns into Jinjang Utara (you’ll see a chinese temple). It’s the way where you want to go to Metro Prima, Kepong. Ok, I really suck in directions…

The restaurant specialises in steamboat and their price is rather is the cheapest among all that I’ve seen with RM9.80/head. To be honest, I never expect RM9.80/head would taste anything as nice as compare to those that are RM12++/head but I’m wrong. The soup base for the steamboat was not bad at all and the ingredients were fresh! Besides that, they also run as a “大炒” business. This time we went there to try out their “大炒” as my dad said their fish head was not bad.

    XO 炒老鼠粉 (RM12)

This particular “loh shu fun” was served in a claypot if I didn’t remember wrongly. It is not extraordinarily tasty if you ask me. This is a simple claypot “loh shu fun” with some shredded dried scallops, crab meat, and also some shark-fin-look-a-like thingy in it.

    怪味蒸鱼头 (RM18)

This fish is quite unique as it’s my first time trying out this style of steamed fish head. There’s a mixture of ginger paste with “dou si”/fermented bean paste. It tasted pretty ok….oh ya I spotted some lard on the sauce too which obviously does help in raising up the aroma of this dish.fried_beehoon.jpg
    唐山炒米粉 (RM12)

This is their signature fried “bee hoon”. I love this! It has enough of the “wok hei” and the aromatic salted fish keeps making you want nothing but more~ Not too dry nor too wet, this fried “bee hoon” is really worth trying.

    “si 汁”炒石班鱼头 (RM18)

So sorry that I’m not able to find the chinese word “si” to continue with the “汁炒石班鱼头”…therefore I could only write it as “si 汁”炒石班鱼头”. *blush!* Really paiseh about it, but I guess you guys know what does it meant right? Tee heee~ Well, this is the dish my dad was raving about.

I really do love this very much. It is very very aromatic, fragrantly fried with the bean paste (dou si), and it has lard too! The fish were fresh, meat are succulent. The fragrance of the spices (onions, bean paste, chili, spring onion, etc) are like being injected into the flesh of these fish. Get a bowl of white rice and you could munch it all down with just this dish as their sauce were superb….Thumbs up!

    pork.jpg
    炖猪脚 (RM12)

I forgot what this dish is called, but I assumed it is the same meaning as braised pork leg? Yes, it is correct! Just that it’s not the nicely “named” name for the dish only…erm, ok I don’t know what I’m typing.

This pork leg was not bad at all. But, the pork were not very tender yet…guess that we’re there too early huh? So, they took the pork leg back to re-braise it. When it came back..it was all perfect and good. I tell you, the sauce (lots of spices in it) was really very tempting and I love this kind of dish as their sauce could go really well with white rice. It’s almost the same as those bah kut teh stalls that serves this kind of “braised pork leg with dried chili”, just that this one’s not braised with dried chili and it’s not as strong flavor as the ones in bah kut teh stalls.

    咸蛋炒蟹 (RM42)

Last but not least, the KING of the SEA….crabby~~~! LOL. This is their “Salted Egg Yolk Crab”. I’m totally in love with it…very very aromatic and the crabs were fully covered with crushed egg yolks. The crab meat were fresh and sweet in taste. As you continue on biting, licking, and sucking more of the crab’s shell and all…it does get a little tad too salty. But, who cares! I still love the taste of it~~~ :P
