Ramadan Special @ Oriental Spoon
By Cookies Cream | September 20, 2008

I’m sure most of you have heard about Oriental Spoon’s Dim Sum especially their buffet Dim Sum. Well, I’ve heard a lot of their good reviews on the Dim Sum. I thought of giving it a try couple of weeks before the dim sum buffet ends. Luck wasn’t on my side as they’re fully booked for the 2 weeks just before the promotion ends.

Finally, I’m there with Jason , friends and also Daryl and friend for a food review on their Ramadan spread. There’s no Dim Sum on their Ramadan Special but I would still love to try them out as I’ve never been there before. All of their Ramadan packages looked very interesting.
We met Jade for the first time there that night. She introduced the Ramadan Special to us on behalf of Oriental Spoon. It’s a great pleasure to meet all the others too (Jason’s and Daryl’s friends)!
They’re having a total of 4 packages to choose from for the Ramadan Special starting with Noble Package, Royal Package, Imperial Package, and Emperor Package.
We tasted the Royal Package (for 10 persons), plus 2 extra dishes from Imperial Package and Emperor Package that Jade asked to add it in for us.
The dishes for the night includes:

First dish was Chef’s Special Appetizer (厨师配对). This dish came with 4 different portions, from left counter clockwise: Thai Style Abalone slices, Fried prawns with crunchy snow peas in spicy and sour sauce, Kam Heong chicken wrapped in beancurd skin, and hotdog roll. The Kam Heong chicken wrapped in beancurd skin is worth a mention. It tickles your taste bud when you take the first bite. The chicken were fried together with glass noodles (dong fun). The taste of Kam Heong and honey lingered in my mouth and made me wanting more!

I would have to say, though their hotdog rolls looked pretty common but I loved it for it’s light batter with the just-right-amount of hotdog, seaweed, and fish paste wrapped together made it so nice to munch on. One is definitely not enough for you.

This prawn is awesome. Really, I love this because it has enough of the “wok hei”, crunchy prawns and snow peas. Not too sour nor too spicy.

After the first dish, Shark’s Fin Soup With Chicken Shred (红烧鸡丝生翅) is up. The strong essence of chicken taste made this soup quite unique with shredded chicken, slices of mushrooms, and of course the shark’s fin.

Next up was their Crisp Roasted Chicken With Biscuit Crumbs (脆奇淋吊烧鸡). The coating of the biscuit crumbs were combined with some crushed dried chili shrimps to add in more flavors to the chicken.

Here comes the fish session! Steamed Sea Garoupa With Lime and Thai Style Soya Sauce (泰式酸柑蒸海班). The moment the waitress placed this plate of superbly fresh looking fish on our table, the aromatic smell was already killing me!!! The sauce was sooo nice BECAUSE I love it being sourish enough (for my taste bud) with mixture of some aromatic fish sauce and mashed ginger.

This was an additional dish selected by Jade, it’s from the Imperial Package - Steamed Cod Fish with Chinese Herbs (川弓天麻蒸雪鱼). The herb sauce was quite light.

Another additional dish that comes from the Emperor Package - Prawns with Pumpkin Sauce and Hot & Spicy Sauce (虾球辣味两食). The prawn in spicy sauce was just at the right spiciness, without killing off the prawn’s taste entirely. Quite nicely cooked I would say.

They cubed the pumpkins and cooked it as a sauce base to be covered with lightly fried prawns. I like the fact that the diced pumpkins were not too softly cooked, adding in a little extra crunch in this dish to balance with the prawn’s crunchiness.

Continuation from the Royal Packaged was the Chinese Marrow Rings Stuffed with Prawns (玉镜烧虾皇). The presentation of this dish was great! It’s very creative I would say, with the cutting techniques to make these prawns to stand up in circles, I’m happy when I see this dish. This dish was a little mild on the taste, you’ll feel refreshed when you eat the melon as it’s crunchy and light (serves as a chair for each prawn). =)

Another eye-catching dish was the Chinese Cabbage wrapped Vegetables and Mushrooms (白玉蒇珍). Inside these cabbage wraps consisted of treasures like mini mushrooms, ginkgo, dried lily bulbs (bai he/pak hap), and some sort of nuts which is crunchy and tasted almond-y. The dish was garnished with red and yellow capsicums.

Last main dish of the night was this Fried Pearl Rice with Spinach Juice (翡翠五色炒饭). This fried rice looked interesting as they added in spinach juice while cooking the rice. The chef added in diced century eggs, diced carrots, and dried shrimps. It’s quite surprising that this fried rice is not oily at all! The ones that I normally get outside any stalls would be oily, at least a little. I would say this is a healthy non-oily spinach fried rice.

It’s Dessert of the night was “Lin Chee Kang” (莲子羹). Though it don’t looked exactly like “Lin Chee Kang”, it’s still quite refreshing and nice to drink with some longan flesh, jely, and other “Lin Chee Kang” ingredients.

My favourite part had arrived! Their dessert of the night was Fried Carrot-shaped dumpling with Pandan paste, and chestnut jelly (靓美点两道). Their refreshing chestnut jelly was light and not too sweet. I like chestnut especially with jelly.
I love their carrot-shaped dumpling so much! I’m not sure what’s the pastry made of but it’s a little sticky and chewy so I’m guessing some glutinous rice flour mixed with sweet potatoes (as from what Jason thought). The aromatic pandan lotus paste inside the carrot dumpling was just heavenly good~ I can eat up all the carrot dumplings I tell you!

- Royal Package (RM 588+)
- Imperial Package (RM 688+)
- Emperor Package (RM 988+)
